Guyana increases water rationing

Guyana’s water company has increased rationing as it struggles to deal with the effects of the extended dry season.

Guyana Water Incorporated says residents in Georgetown will now receive water at normal pressure for two five-hour periods a day.

Farmers and officials have also been struggling to mitigate the effects of the long dry season on two of the country’s main exports, rice and sugar.

Half of the water supplied to residents of Georgetown comes from rainfall and the other half from very deep wells.

However, the lack of rainfall has placed increased demand on the deep aquifers which are not being replenished, and are now in danger of running dry.
