Campbell Brown, Brooks advance to semi-finals
Two-time Olympic 200-metre champion Veronica Campbell-Brown and her Jamaican teammate Sheri-Ann Brooks have qualified for the semi-finals of the women’s 60 metre dash on today’s opening day of the three-day World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Campbell-Brown qualified with the second-fastest time after winning Heat Two in 7.21 ahead of Bahamian Chandra Sturrup, who clocked .22.
Brooks booked her place following a second place finish in Heat 5. She clocked 7.32.
In the men’s 60 metres, Jamaica’s Nesta Carter qualified for the semi-finals after a second place finish in Heat 5.
Carter clocked 6 point 6-9 to finish behind Angel David Rodriques of Spain, who won in a time of 6.67.
Lerone Clark did not advance after a fourth place finish in Heat 6. He stopped the clock at 7.78.
The semi-finals and final of both sprints will take place tomorrow. The first semi-final is scheduled to start at 8.20 a.m. Jamaica time.
Both Jamaican women have qualified for the semi-finals of the women’s 60-metre hurdles. Lacena Golding-Clarke clocked 8.02 to finish second in Heat Three won by Canadian Priscila Lopes-Schliep in 7.94.
Vonette Dixon, 8.04, also had to settle for second place, this in Heat Four won by American Lolo Jones in 7.95.
In the men’s equivalent, Maurice Wignal clocked a season-best 7.71 for second place in Heat Four won by Felipe Vivancos of Spain in a season-best 7.67.
Dwight Thomas is out of the semi-finals after failing to finish his race.
Jamaican Novlene Williams-Mills, the 2007 outdoor World Championship bronze medallists, has advanced to the final of the women’s 400 metres following two rounds.
Williams-Mills, clocked a season-best 51.77 seconds for the runner-up spot in Heat One of the semi-finals, while her teammate Bobby-Gaye Wilkins did not qualified after finishing fifth in semi-final two.
Jamaica will not be represented in the men’s equivalent as Edino Steele and Ricardo Williams finished down the track in their semi-finals.
