Union seeking international help on labour row

The Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union is seeking international support in its prolonged industrial dispute with the Russian-owned Bauxite Company of Guyana.

The union and the company have been at odds since last November over increased pay and better working conditions for workers.

The union is also accusing the Bharrat Jagdeo government of remaining silent on the impasse despite requests for its intervention.

The union has made a decision to intensify its action by embarking on a worldwide petition to get international support for its cause.

The Bauxite Company of Guyana is a subsidiary of the Moscow-based Russian Aluminum (RUSAL).
