Bermuda legislators reject salary bill

Legislators in Bermuda have rejected a bill that would give Deputy Premier and Finance Minister Paula Cox a pay increase.

The bill would have moved Ms Cox’s salary from US$100,000 to US $150,000 a year.

Premier Dr. Ewart Brown brought the bill to the House of Assembly.

Members of Parliament have already agreed to deferring their own pay increases due to the economic crisis.

Some legislators have accused Premier Brown of using the bill as a ploy to embarrass the finance minister.

There are speculations that Ms Cox will be seeking to take over the premiership when Premier Brown ends his term in October.
