The centennial staging of the four-day ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championship at the National Stadium is poised for an interesting third day today after Calabar High surged ahead in the boys’ race leaving defending champions Kingston College in third.

The Red Hills-based school who ended Wednesday’s opening day in third place has taken the lead with 53 points after five finals.

They’re 17 ahead of first day leader Wolmer’s Boys on 36, while KC holds the third position with 34, followed by Jamaica College on 21 and St George’s College 9.

In the girls’ race, Manchester High are ahead with 30 points after six finals, two ahead of first day leader Vere Technical on 28. Defending champions Holmwood are in third with 27, followed by St Hugh’s 24, Wolmer’s 20, while favourites Edwin Allen and St Elizabeth Technical High are on 16 points each.

Day two produced three records.

The first record of the day went to St Hughs’ Candicea Bernard, who accounted for the Girls’ Shot Put Open final with a throw of 13.24 metres to beat the 2009 mark of 12.87 set by schoolmate Micara Vassell.

It was the second record of the meet for Bernard, who also set a new mark in the Class One Discus on Wednesday’s first day.

Chad Wright of Calabar High produced the second record with a 58.86 metre throw to win the Class One Boys Discus final, his second record of the meet.

It was a one-two finish for Calabar as Travis Smikle, who held the previous record, was second with a throw of 58.68 metres, which also bettered the old mark.

Chanice Porter of Manchester High accounted for the third record with a leap of 6.43 metres in the Girls Class Two Long Jump final, erasing the 2007 mark of 6.11 metres set by Salcia Slack of Holmwood Technical.

Today’s penultimate day is scheduled to start this morning at 8:30. There will be 11 boys and 13 girls’ finals.
