The United Nations has started daily radio announcements to help women at risk from rape in Haiti\'s squalid camps.

The world body and rights group Amnesty International are among those concerned about women being subjected to sexual violence in the temporary shelters now housing hundreds of thousands of earthquake survivors.

The UN is airing six radio spots daily focusing on how women can improve their security and how they can protect themselves in an assault.

Amnesty International has been on the ground in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, taking a detailed look at the situation.

Amnesty official, Matteo Desabille, says there are practical measures that can be taken to protect women in the camps, including security patrols at nights.
