Jamaica gets six medals at CARIFTA swimming

Jamaica picked up six medals last night to end the 2010 CARIFTA Swimming Championships in fifth place in the points’ standings with 495 points.



The four-day championships were held at the National Stadium Pool in Kingston and Trinidad and Tobago easily retained their title by topping both the points’ standings and medal table.



T&T ended the Championships with an impressive medal haul of 94 including 46 gold, 31 silver and 17 bronze for a whopping 1011 points.



Barbados were second with a medal count of 48 including 20 gold, 21 silver and seven bronze,while Guadeloupe were third with 47 medals, eight gold, 19 silver and 20 bronze.



Guadeloupe were second in the points’ standings with 707 and The Bahamas third with 603 points.



As a result of the six-medal haul last night, Jamaica finished with a medal-haul of 22 including six gold, six silver and 11 bronze which put them eight on the medal table.



Kevaughn Campbell won the only gold for Jamaica on the final night by landing the Boys 11 to 12 100-metre breaststroke in one minute 14.74 seconds. He finished well ahead of second place Corey Ollivierre of Grenada who clocked one minute 19.56 seconds.



Jamaica’s Robert Marshall was seventh in one minute 22.41seconds.



Timothy Wynter won the silver medal for Jamaica in the Boys 13 to 14 200-metre backstroke. He clocked two minutes 16.88 seconds behind gold medal winner Joris Bouchaut of Guadeloupe, who won in two minutes 16.39 seconds.



Ivana Chang in the Girls 11 to 12 50-metre freestyle, the Girls and Boys’ 11 to 12 200-metre freestyle relay teams and the boys’ 15 to 17 200-metre freestyle relay team accounted for the bronze medals.
