Haiti police seek prison breakers

The police in Haiti police and members of the United Nations forces have started a campaign to recapture thousands of escaped prisoners who fled the central jail after January\'s earthquake.



The police have reportedly intensified raids, patrols and targeted arrests in an effort to quell a rising crime rate that has alarmed residents and international aid workers.



Chief Commissioner Michelange Gedeon said his forces are engaged in a war against the gangs.



Police estimate that around 4,000 convicts escaped the main prison in Port au Prince after the quake.



About 200 have since been recaptured.
