The death toll from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake in China this morning has increased to more than 400.

Earlier reports had stated that at least 300 people had died.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that at least 10,000 people are injured.

The powerful tremor struck remote Yushu county, 500 miles south-west of the provincial capital Xining, at 7.49 a.m. at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.

Meanwhile, police say hundreds of survivors have already been pulled from the rubble.

According to officials, at least one aid flight has been able to land at the local airport.
