Jamaica to participate in Delhi tournament
Jamaica are among three Caribbean countries confirmed to participate in the netball competition at the Commonwealth Games later this year in India.
Netball’s world governing body, the International Federation of Netball Association and the Commonwealth Games Federation confirmed today that Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados had accepted invitations for the Games which run from October 3 to 14.
Twelve nations will participate in the netball competition.
Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls are ranked fourth in the World while Trinidad and Tobago are 10th and Barbados, 11th.
The number one-ranked Australia lead the list of participants with reigning World champions New Zealand and England down to do battle.
New Zealand are also the defending Commonwealth Champions after winning the competition in Melbourne, Australia four years ago.
Jamaica finished fourth in that tournament after losing to the Silver Ferns in the semi-finals. Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines also competed but finished down the standings.
This year, Jamaica will clash in Group A with Trinidad and Tobago, Australia, Samoa, Malawi and hosts India; while Barbados will face the threats of New Zealand, England, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands and South Africa in Group B.
All three Caribbean sides will be in action on the opening day of competition as Jamaica face T&T while Barbados clash with England.
