US says Venezuela no threat

The US Defence Secretary Robert Gates says he does not see Venezuela as a military threat.

His comment comes after Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez increased arms purchases from Russia and resumed his fiery anti-America rhetoric.

Mr. Gates is suggesting that Mr. Chavez is trying in part to distract Venezuelans from domestic woes.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon chief is expected in Barbados on Friday for a Caribbean security conference.
