Trinidad election set for May

The people of Trinidad and Tobago are to go to the polls on May 24 to elect a new government.

The election next month comes less than three years after the incumbent People’s National Movement (PNM) received a 26-15 victory in the 2007 general election.

A statement from the Office of Prime Minister Patrick Manning earlier today stated that President George Maxwell Richards has been advised to issue a writ of election for May 24 and that Nomination Day will be on May 3.

The ruling party, which is expected to contest all 41 seats in the election, is likely to face a unified opposition for control of the government of this oil-rich twin island republic.

The main opposition United National Congress and the Congress of the People Party have been holding talks aimed at ensuring that there is no repeat of the 2007 general election when the PNM won some of the constituencies as a result of the split in the opposition votes.
