Bravo fail with the bat again

West Indies Captain Chris Gayle watched from the bench as his regional teammate Dwayne Bravo failed with the bat in Kolkata Knight Riders’ consolation nine-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League at Eden Gardens today.

Gayle, who will lead West Indies into the World 20/20 Championship later this month, was rested in the final preliminary match of the tournament with Kolkata already ruled out of semi-final contention while Bravo was back in the fray after a three-match layoff.

Bravo managed a mere five runs from nine balls as Mumbai got 133 for eight after winning the toss and taking first knock.

Kolkata replied with 135 for one with Brendon McCallum unbeaten on 57 from 56 balls.

Bravo bowled two overs that cost a miserly seven runs. He won the award for the catch of the match at extra cover, almost colliding with teammate Ryan McLaren to dismiss Knight Riders captain Sourav Ganguly for 42 from 36 balls.

Mumbai topped the table despite losing their final match and will now play fourth placed Royal Challengers Bangalore in Mumbai in the first semi-final on Wednesday.

The other semi-final features second placed Deccan Chargers, with the West Indies pair of Kemar Roach and Dwayne Smith, clashing with the third placed Chennai Super Kings on Thursday.

The tournament concludes in Mumbai with the final on Sunday.
