The government in St Kitts and Nevis says it has upgraded its diplomatic presence in Taiwan.

According to a government statement, Jasmine Huggins has been named as the Federation’s first Ambassador to Taiwan after she presented her letters of credence to President Ma Ying-jeou earlier today.

Ms Huggins said her new appointment as Ambassador Extraordinary signals a deepening of the friendship between the two countries and is a significant milestone in her diplomatic career.

The St Kitts and Nevis Embassy was established in Taiwan in December 2007, 24 years after the two countries developed diplomatic relations.

Prime Minister Denzil Douglas said the presence in Taipei is also to boost a growing trend of students going to Taiwan to study.

The new Ambassador said one of her aims is to expand this area of cooperation between Taiwan and St Kitts and Nevis.
