Haiti appeals for election-related aid

Haitian President Rene Preval is calling for international aid to organise elections this year in his quake-hit country.

He made the appeal after meeting with Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, at the close of a meeting between Brazil and CARICOM countries.

Mr Preval says aid, specific to elections, is needed from Brazil and the rest of the international community.

Brazil’s vice minister for external relations, Antonio Patriota, says his government will consult with the United Nations, the Organisation of American States and other countries to support elections in Haiti.
