The Independence Park Limited (IPL), which manages the National Stadium, says emergency works to address a number of problems at the facility before Thursday are well at an advance stage.

The National Stadium is the venue for Saturday’s staging of the eighth Jamaica International Invitational track meet. However, Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie says he would close the Stadium if Independence Park Limited fails to meet the deadline.

A release from Independence Park Limited earlier today said the National Stadium was on target to host the Jamaica International Invitational Meet.

The release stated that Independence Park Limited is presently working to correct a list of defects under the close supervision of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC).

Among the emergency works being carried out is repairs to the leaking cantilever, which covers the grandstand of the Stadium, which was built in 1962.

The defects to the Stadium were pointed out last week after a two-hour inspection by KSAC along with members of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPEM), the Jamaica Fire Brigade and the Public Health Authority of the Ministry of Health.
