The Electoral Commission in Antigua and Barbuda is calling on Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer\'s governing United Progressive Party to respect the commission\'s independence.

Mr Spencer is said to be seeking the resignation of the commissioner over the fallout from the March 2009 general election and a recent high court ruling which declared his seat and that of two cabinet ministers vacant.

In a statement The Electoral Commission said it has been forced to address and correct what it called lies and misinformation being disseminating by the governing party and its officials for cheap political gain.
