Former Trinidadian High Court Judge Herbert Volney is being criticised for his decision to leave the judiciary in order to contest the May 24 general elections.

Mr. Volney sent his resignation to the Chief Justice Ivor Archie on Wednesday.

In his resignation letter Justice Volney, who has been a judge for 15 years, said he had to leave the bench to be critical of the lack of commitment by the government to the judiciary.

In his response, Chief Justice Archie said the movement of the judge into politics brings the judiciary into disrepute.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Patrick Manning has questioned whether the independence of the judiciary has been compromised following the resignations of Justice Volney and a magistrate to contest the election.
