A proposal by the President of Haiti to extend his term by three months, in case elections cannot be held this year, has met with some opposition.

One Senator, Youri Latortue, says the plan violates the constitution and has pledged to challenge it before the country’s Supreme Court.

The current term of President Rene Preval is scheduled to end on February 7 next year.

However, electoral officials are rushing to hold the presidential election as scheduled, in November because of the devastating earthquake in Janauary.
