West Indies back in contention for 20/20 Cup title
West Indies captain Chris Gayle says his side is now focusing on getting into the semifinals of the International Cricket Council 20/20 World Cup, following yesterday’s 14-run victory over India in their must-win Super Eights game at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
The win reignited West Indies’ hopes of winning the championship. The hosts have now moved to two points from two Super Eights game, the same as Sri Lanka. India are at the bottom of the table without a point.
Australia, who thrashed Sri Lanka by 81 runs in the group’s other match yesterday, lead the table with four points and have sealed their place in the semi-final round.
The final set of games in the group will take place tomorrow at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia.
West Indies will meet Australia at 5.00 p.m. in the afternoon local time, while India and Sri Lanka will face off in the first match at 1.00 p.m.
Gayle starred for West Indies yesterday, slamming 98 from 66 balls to lead his team to 169 for six off their allotted 20 overs.
He received good support from Darren Sammy, who scored 19 from 10 balls, Kieron Pollard, 17 from 11, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 23 from 29.
India were then restricted to 155 for nine. Kemar Roach was the most successful bowler for West Indies with two for 38 off four overs.
The last semi-final place from Group ‘B’ will be decided today in St Lucia.
Outgoing champions Pakistan will face third place South Africa at 9.30 a.m. this morning, while England, who have already cemented their place, will play second place New Zealand at 1.30 p.m.
