Anguilla remains without a budget
Anguilla remains without a national budget as political parties in the United Kingdom try to broker a deal following the inconclusive general elections last week.
The island is an overseas British territory.
By law, the Anguilla government had until April 30 to outline a new budget.
Although Chief Minister Hubert Hughes presented a US$78.8 million package to the House of Assembly on April 23, it’s still awaiting final approval by London.
Last week, Britain’s Minister responsible for Overseas Territories, Chris Bryant informed the Anguillan authorities that the island would have to wait the outcome of the May 6 general election before it could secure funding for the new year.
However with last week’s poll resulting in no clear winner, there are fears that this could further delay the approval of the budget.
