Hosts West Indies were eliminated from the International Cricket Council 20/20 World Cup after a six-wicket thrashing by Australia in the final Super Eight match at the Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia yesterday.

The West Indies needed to beat Australia by 24 runs or more to advance to the final four, but the sell-out crowd of 12,000 was silenced when Captain Chris Gayle fell in the opening over to Dirk Nannes, the tournament\'s leading wicket-taker.

West Indies were eventually bowled out for a modest 105 off 19 overs.

Ramnaresh Sarwan top scored for West Indies with 26 off 31 balls, while Shivnarine Chanderpaul got 24 from 28 balls. Kieron Pollard, 13 from 14 balls, was the only other batsman to get into double figures.

Brad Haddin then smashed 42 off 46 balls as Australia, replied with 109 for four off 16.2 overs.

Opener David Warner got the Australian chase off to a strong start with 25 off 12 balls.

Jerome Taylor, Sulieman Benn and Chris Gayle took a wicket each for West Indies.

Australia topped the Super Eight Group and will next face defending champions Pakistan in the semifinals on Friday. Group E winners England meet Sri Lanka tomorrow.
