Jamaica’s Asafa Powell wins 100m heat in 9.75
Former 100-metre world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica opened his international season with an impressive 9.75 seconds to win Heat Two of the men’s 100 metres at the first meet of the newly created Diamond League at Doha today.
Powell won ahead of Jaysuma Saidy of Norway who clocked 9.9 and Nesta Carter of Jamaica was third in 10.03.
Powell’s training partner Michael Frater won Heat One in 9.97 ahead of Lerone Clarke, also of Jamaica. Clarke clocked 9.98 seconds.
Meanwhile, Jamaica had a one-two finish in the women’s 200 metres.
Kerron Stewart won the event in 22.34 ahead of Sherone Simpson, who clocked 22.64. Jamaican Sherri-Ann Brooks was fourth in 22 .73 and Anneisha McLaughlin was fifth in 22.93.
Jamaica’s Novlene Williams-Mills and Shericka Williams will contest the women’s 400 metres at 12.54 p.m.
