The Central Electoral Board in the Dominican Republic has confirmed that one person was killed during polls to elect senators, delegates and mayors yesterday.
It says a member of the opposition Dominican Revolutionary Party was murdered in a fight between government supporters and opponents in the town of San Cristobal.
Three other people were wounded in the incident.
A spokesman for the electoral board, Roberto Rosario, says there had been other isolated clashes too, but that they had a very limited effect on the poll.
Meanwhile, President Leonel Fernandez, who was favoured to keep his party\'s majority in Congress, has denounced the violence.
