Dominican AG supports ruling on parliamentary seats

The attorney general Francine Baron-Royer has said that the speaker of the Parliament, acted within the law when she declared the seats of two opposition legislators vacant earlier this month.

Former prime minister Edison James said the Speaker, Alix Boyd-Knights, had no authority to declare the seats vacant even though the legislators, including himself, have not been attending parliament.

The legislators have been boycotting Parliament in support of claims by the opposition United Workers Party that there had been several irregularities in last December’s general election.

Mr. James said that the Workers UWP believes that it’s the High Court and not the Speaker that should declare any seat vacant in the Dominica parliament.

However, the attorney general disagreed.
