Amerindian villages flooded

Guyanese Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud says the government is working on a strategy to bring relief to the flooded Amerindian communities.

Authorities are now preparing to assist the scattered villages in the far south of the country suffering from severe flooding from heavy seasonal rainfall.

Officials say several roads and bridges in the Rupununi area have been washed away by the rains, with some areas now inaccessible by land.

The villages there are dependent in part on small-scale farming for food supplies.
