Grenada to begin maritime talks with Venezuela

The Grenadian government says it hopes to begin talks shortly with Venezuela on a maritime boundary agreement, more than a month after it signed a similar accord with Trinidad and Tobago.

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Peter David, says the initial focus of the talks will be on the so-called “tri-point” where the maritime boundaries of Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela and Grenada meet.

The Government’s announcement of its intention to begin talks with Venezuela comes on the heels of a statement by Opposition Leader Dr Keith Mitchell, urging the new government in Trinidad and Tobago to review the maritime treaty signed with the Tillman Thomas administration last month.

Meanwhile, the former Attorney General, Dr Francis Alexis, is calling for political parties to put aside their differences and support the upcoming talks with Venezuela.
