WI players back Gayle, says coach Gibson
West Indies coach Ottis Gibson says players have given their firm backing to captain Chris Gayle for speaking out on controversial team issues.
Gibson was speaking against the backdrop of the on-the-field run-in between Sulieman Benn and Gayle during Sunday’s fourth one-dayer against South Africa, which resulted in the left-arm spinner being sent off.
At a post-match media conference, Gayle revealed that Benn had failed to comply with a directive he had given.
Gibson says Gayle is a very quite person but his frustration is causing him to come out and talk and the players understand.
Gibson says the players think the approach by Gayle during the run-in with Benn could lead to improvement.
For his actions, Benn was Monday fined 100 per cent of his match fee following a meeting of the team’s management.
Benn was subsequently announced in the 14-man squad for the fifth and final one-dayer starting at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad tomorrow, and trained with the rest of the team yesterday.
Despite the Windies’ woeful form, Gibson says he has seen improvement in the team and hoped they could finish the series with a win.
West Indies are currently 4-0 down to South Africa in a five-match one-day series and are scheduled to face the Proteas in a three-match Test series later this month.
