Oil Company British Petroleum (BP) has cut a ruptured pipe from the leaking Gulf of Mexico oil well, a key step in the latest effort to cap the well.

Admiral Thad Allen, the US official overseeing the spill response, says there are plans to lower a cap to contain the oil spill.

The operation had been delayed after a saw became stuck in the thick pipe.

US President Barack Obama is to visit the gulf tomorrow, his third trip there since the leak began six weeks ago.
