Update: Powell wins in world leading time
Asafa Powell overcame a slow start to set the fastest time in the world this year with a storming run of 9.82 seconds to win the 100 metres at the Diamond League series in Rome today.
The 27-year-old Jamaican eclipsed his previous best this season of 9.83, ahead of French pair Christophe Lemaitre and Martial Mbandjock.
Both clocked 10.09, but 19-year-old Lemaitre who forgot his spikes and ran in a hastily bought new pair, was second.
Powell’s Jamaican teammates Lerone Clarke, 10.19 and Mario Forsythe, 10.25 finished fifth and sixth.
Olympic and world 100 women\'s champion Shelly-Ann Fraser of Jamaica endured a frustrating night after she false-started to be disqualified, along with Mikkele Barber of the United States.
In her absence Lashauntea Moore, 11.04, of the United States beat Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas, 11.14, for first place. Jamaican Aleen Bailey clocked a season-best 11.40 for sixth.
Jamaica also secured two second place finishes at the meet.
Dwight Thomas, 13.31, was runner up to Cuban Dayron Robles 13.14 in the men’s 110-metre hurdles while Kaliese Spencer ran a personal-best 53.48 for second in the women’s 400-metre hurdles.
The race was won by American Lashinda Demus in a meet record and world leading 52.82 seconds.
In the men’s 200 metres, the Jamaican pair of Ainsley Waugh, 20.80 and Marvin Anderson 26.30, finished sixth and seventh to American winner Walter Dix, who won in a meet record 19.86.
