South Africa crush poor West Indies
West Indies suffered an embarrassing 163-run defeat to South Africa late on the fourth day of the opening Test at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad yesterday.
The tourists declared their second innings on 206 for 4 after 18.3 overs of batting in the morning with Graeme Smith missing an attempted sweep on 90 to be bowled by Sulieman Benn.
South Africa were 155 for two overnight, an overall lead of 405 after leading West Indies by 250 on first innings.
That left the Windies needing 457 to win after the declaration. Two wickets down at lunch and 139 for 4 at tea, West Indies were bowled out for 293 with nine minutes left in the day.
Captain Chris Gayle top scored for West Indies with 73, while Dwayne Bravo 49 and Sulieman Benn 42 also got among the runs.
Dale Steyn was the most successful bowler for South Africa with 3 for 65, while Morne Morkel and Paul Harris supported with two wickets a piece.
Final scores in the match are South Africa 352 and 206 for four declared, West Indies 102 and 293.
The second Test will take place in St Kitts, starting on Friday.
