Former St Lucian PM blames OECS countries

Former St Lucian Prime Minister Dr. Vaughan Lewis has chided countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

He said the countries have not taken a strong enough position within CARICOM, on trade negotiations with Europe and the United States.

Dr. Lewis said for example, OECS countries were not involved in the debates on the economic partnership agreements between the European Union and African Caribbean Pacific countries.

He also said as a result of some agreements, smaller Caribbean states would lose secure markets without adequate replacements.

The former Prime Minister said the OECS should adopt a tougher stance to get greater benefits from CARICOM-negotiated deals.
