Obama calls for clean energy push

The US President Barack Obama is urging his Democratic Party and other individuals to support a government campaign for clean energy.

The statement came during a visit of areas affected by the BP oil spill, including Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

The president asked his network to support a campaign to change the way America produces and consumes its energy.

Earlier, Mr. Obama said the ongoing oil spill would change the way the US thinks about energy forever.

He was comparing the effect of the disaster on the environment to the way 9/11 shaped US security policy.

Tens of thousands of barrels of oil a day have gushed into the Gulf of Mexico since a rig exploded and sank in April.

It’s estimated that some 1.7 million gallons of oil a day might have been gushing out before the well was capped.
