Mexico, Uruguay battle for the next round

Published:Tuesday | June 22, 2010 | 10:32 AM

Mexico and Uruguay need only a draw in their Group ‘A’ match this morning at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, South Africa to take both through to the next round of the World Cup.

Mexico and Uruguay each have four points, while hosts South Africa and France, who will also face off this morning, both have one point apiece.

France and the host nation will be eliminated from the World Cup if Mexico and Uruguay draw.

Both games are scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m. Jamaica time.

Mexico have fielded attacking lineups in their two previous matches, in a 4-3-3 formation, a strategy that has won praise from pundits and other teams.

Mexico coach Javier Aguirre has no intention of playing for a draw, but is happy to accept that result if it means advancing to the round of 16.

There has been intense speculation in Mexico and Uruguay that both teams have come to an arrangement to play for a draw. But Aguirre denied that.

The two qualifiers from Group ‘B’ will also be decided today.

Argentina, who lead the group with maximum six points, will face third place Greece, while second place South Korea will play already eliminated Nigeria.

Those matches are scheduled to start at 1.30 p.m.

Greece need nothing short of a miracle to secure their progression to the second round.

Otto Rehhagel\'s side need to win by a whopping three-goal margin against red-hot Argentina to advance to the knockout stage.

Should they fail to secure a win by three or more goals, they would be left waiting on the result of the Nigeria and South Korea match before learning their fate.

Local football expert Geoffery Maxwell is not expecting anything unusual today.
