Asafa Powell wins national 200m title
Former 100-metre record holder Asafa Powell continued his impressive form this season, when he clocked his second fastest 200-metre time in winning the event at the National Championships last night at the National Stadium.
Powell, who ran the fastest 100 metres for the year during the fourth meet of the Diamond League Series earlier this month, took the national 200-metre title very easily in 19.97 seconds.
He was well ahead of second place Lanceford Spence, who clocked 20.63, while Rasheed Dwyer was third in 20.65.
Powell, who was very tired at the end, says he ran a very cautious race.
The women’s 200-metre title was won by Powell’s MVP teammate Shelly-Ann Fraser.
Fraser, the Olympic and World Championship 100-metre gold medallist, took the event in 22.49. Anneisha McLaughlin was second in 22.98.
Meanwhile, Oshane Bailey created a stunning upset to win the national 100-metre title in a personal-best 10.14. Michael Frater was second in 10.16.
Novlene Williams-Mills retained the 400-metre title in 50.52, while Oral Thompson dethroned Ricardo Chambers by winning the men’s 400 in 45.79.
