West Indies, trailing South Africa by 115 runs, were 17 without loss at Sports Time on day three of the third and final test at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
Captain Chris Gayle is on nine and Dale Richards on 8.
Earlier, left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn claimed six for 81 as South Africa resuming on 285 for six were bowled out for 346.
Ashwell Prince was not out on 78
West Indies are searching for a series-leveling victory.
