US issues travel alert for Haiti
The United States Department of State has warned Americans travelling to Haiti to exercise caution following the murder of four US citizens in recent months.
Yesterday, the US embassy in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, reported that the US citizens were robbed and killed, near the airport in separate incidents in the last three months.
It said that the victims were visiting relatives in the earthquake ravaged country.
The State Department says police authorities believe criminals may be targeting travelers arriving on flights from the United States.
It says while the capacity and capabilities of the Haitian National Police have improved since 2006, the presence of UN Stabilisation Force and UN-formed police units remain critical to maintaining an adequate level of security throughout the country.
