More than 200 people were left homeless last night in the Guyanese mining town of Madhia.
A number of businesses were destroyed after a fire of unknown origin swept through a popular arcade.
Fire officials say the blaze started in a building operated by a popular businessman and quickly spread, destroying 25 other businesses and a number of mainly wooden structures.
The Region 8 Chairman, Senor Bell says he’s deeply saddened by the tragedy, and is concerned that almost every business in the arcade was destroyed.
Many of the homeless have been re-located to nearby shelters.
Government officials are expected to visit the area today to assess the damage done.
