Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Baldwin Spencer, says the government will be seeking sanctions against the United States, if Washington continues to thwart efforts at finding a negotiated solution to its dispute over Internet Gaming Services.
Prime Minister Spencer says the country has sought unsuccessfully, since the World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruling in 2007, to secure a negotiated settlement with the United States and will now be seeking an early meeting with President Barack Obama on the issue.
The Antigua and Barbuda leader says he’s hoping to secure firm regional support to call for the United States, a hemispheric partner, to settle the outstanding issue.
He says CARICOM has the authority to act in unison to protect the interest of member states and that it should utilise all at its disposal to facilitate settlement of the matter.
Spencer says while Antigua and Barbuda has the right to impose sanctions on Washington, in keeping with the WTO rules, the government remains committed to exhausting all possibilities for a negotiated settlement.
