Trinidad and Tobago’s health officials are awaiting confirmation on whether a second person has died from dengue fever.

Last week the health ministry confirmed one death from dengue in June and Chief Medical Officer Dr Anton Cumberbatch said he is still awaiting a report from the San Fernando General Hospital.

The parents of 14-year-old Sherwin Bando say an autopsy has shown that their son died of dengue last week.

The health ministry said more than 400 clinical dengue cases were reported during the period January to June this year and Dr Cumberbatch admitted that there has been a significant mosquito infestation as a result of the recent dry weather.

Dengue fever is spread by infected female aedes aegypti mosquitoes which, breeds in clear water.

The symptoms include fever, joint and bone pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, and fatigue.

A rash may also occur about three to four days after onset of the fever.
