The ruling Progressive Labour Party says it is looking for a candidate to replace Premier Dr. Ewart Brown in the Warwick South Central constituency when he resigns later this year.

The statement made by the ruling party brings to an end much speculation regarding Brown, whose four-year term as the leader of the ruling party and government ends in October.

An opinion poll published on Wednesday said 87 per cent of the people want Brown to step down.

Finance Minister, Paula Cox is the likely victor, to replace Brown as Premier and party insiders have tipped Senators David Burch and Marc Bean as candidates for Brown's seat.

Brown, a physician first won the seat in Warwick in 1993 and has been the parliamentary representative since.

He became Premier in 2006 after beating Alex Scott in a leadership battle.
