Alia Atkinson set a CAC Games record in the women’s 200 metres breast stroke on the first full day of competition at Mayaguez, Puerto Rico yesterday.

The 21-year-old Jamaican swimmer clocked two minutes, 33.64 seconds to qualify for the Final with the fastest time.

Samantha Rahael of Trinidad & Tobago and Alicia Lightbourne of the Bahamas also advanced to the final.

Rahael clocked two minutes, 40.98 seconds to finish second in the second heat, while Lightbourne was third in two minutes 42.18 seconds in the same heat that Atkinson won.

Jamaica’s Victoria Ho finished third in the second heat of the women’s 400 metres freestyle in four minutes, 33.73 seconds.

That performance was good enough to make her the only English-speaking Caribbean competitor in the Final. Her time was the eighth fastest.
