India reach 140 for three
Hosts Sri Lanka seized the initiative in the first cricket test by reducing India to 140 for three at stumps on day three, after declaring their first innings at 520 for eight today.
Sri Lanka had resumed this morning on 256 for two, their first day score, after yesterday’s second day was abandoned because of rain.
Tharanga Paranavitana, who was unbeaten on 110, only added one to his overnight total.
Sri Lanka tail-enders Rangana Herath, 80 not out, and Lasith Malinga, 64, scored their maiden half-centuries and shared 115 for the eighth wicket.
Abhimanya Mithun was the most successful bowler for India, with four for 105, while Ishant Sharma supported with three for 145.
When bad light ended play today, opener Virender Sehwag was unbeaten on 85, but teammates Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid were already out.
Tendulkar, test cricket's greatest run-scorer, was out leg before wicket for eight, to Muttiah Muralitharan, the greatest wicket-taker. Muralitharan, playing his final test, moved to 793 wickets in his career when he caught Tendulkar misjudging a sweep.
Gambhir was dismissed off the second ball of the innings, trapped leg before wicket for two by seamer Lasith Malinga.
