Bad day for Jamaica at World Juniors
Jamaican sprinter, Dexter Lee, squandered his chances of achieving a sprint double at the World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada earlier today, when he was disqualified for false starting.
The incident occurred less than 24 hours after he created history by becoming the first male athlete to retain the 100-metre title at the World Junior Championships.
The former Herbert Morrison Technical sprinter posted 10.21 seconds last night to win the gold medal in the 100 metres.
Lee was down to take part in Heat Four of the 200 metres this morning. He was aiming to follow in the footsteps of Trinidad's Ato Boldon and Briton Christian Malcolm, who won both races in 1992 and 1998.
The Jamaican pair of Yannique Ellington and Diandre Gilbert failed to advance out of the first round of the women’s 200 metres.
Ellington crashed out after clocking 24.63 seconds for sixth place in the opening heat.
Gilbert just missed a qualifying spot, following a fourth place finish in Heat Three. She clocked 24.49 seconds.
Of the two Jamaicans in the women’s 400-metre hurdles, only Ristananna Tracey progressed to the other round. She clocked 58.61 seconds for second place, to book her spot.
Danielle Dowie, clocked 59.28 seconds, for fourth place in Heat Three to crash out.
