Smikle, Wright qualify for medal round
Jamaica’s athletes enjoyed a good morning session on today’s fifth day of competition at the World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada.
The Calabar High School pair of Traves Smikle and Chad Wright have qualified for the medal round of the men’s discus, while Kamal Fuller and Stefan Fennell have qualified for the semifinals of the 110-metre hurdles.
Wright, the national junior discus record-holder, achieved a personal best as he hurled the discus 59.59 metres for second place in his group to book his place in tomorrow’s final.
World Youth Championships bronze medal winner, Smikle qualified with a throw of 59.55 metres. He finished third among his group.
In the men’s 110-metre hurdles, Fuller finished third in Heat 3 in 14.08 seconds to qualify for the tomorrow’s semifinals and Fennell also qualified with a third place finish. He clocked 13.95 in Heat seven.
The opening round of the sprint relays will take place during the afternoon session.
Jamaica have only won a gold medal at the championships so far.
