Trinidad health officials have confirmed an outbreak of dengue fever and are urging citizens to do more to eliminate the aedes aegypti mosquito responsible for spreading the virus.

Chief Medical officer Dr Anton Cumberbatch told a news conference that while it is suspected that five persons have died from dengue fever, only three of the cases have been confirmed.

He said more than 600 cases have been reported to medical institutions across the twin island republic.

Dr Cumberbatch said the dengue fever problem will not go away anytime soon because of the rainy season, but says managing the environment could prevent the outbreak from getting worse.
