The Bahamian government plans to introduce a new multi-million dollar National Prescription Drug Programme free of cost.

The Hubert Ingraham administration says the programme will be implemented on a phased basis, where in the first phase the programme will provide free medication to Bahamians suffering from chronic diseases including asthma, breast cancer and diabetes.

Officials say some 32,000 people will be eligible to benefit from the programme.

They say 10,000 such beneficiaries have already registered.
