HIV/Aids still on the rise in the region

The United Nations AIDS agency (UNAIDS) is reporting that the Caribbean is not comfortable with talking about HIV/AIDS and sexual practices.

The issue was presented at the just-ended 18th International Aids Conference in Vienna.

Director of UNAIDS’, Caribbean programme, Ernest Massiah, says curbing the rate of HIV infection and AIDS in the region will not be helped by the current attitudes towards sex and sexuality.

According to him people in the region are still uncomfortable in discussing issues related to sex.

The regional UNAIDS official says attitudes, such as the criminalisation of certain sexual practises, must be adjusted in order to successfully address the disease and stop its growth.
