Jamaica’s medal tally stands at 38

Jamaica’s medal tally at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico now stands at 38 after a silver and two bronze medals in athletics last night.



Aldwyn Sappleton mined the first medal for Jamaica yesterday, capturing a bronze in the men’s 800-metre final.



He clocked one minute 48.12 seconds for third place behind gold medal winner Eduar Villanueva of Venezuela, one minute 47.73, and Haitian Mois Joseph, one minute 47.79.



The other bronze came from the women’s 4 x 100-metre team. The quartet of Audria Segree, Jovanee Jarrett, Andrea Bliss and Anastasia Leroy clocked a season-best 44.27 seconds for third place. Hosts Puerto won the gold medal in a personal-best 43.46 seconds.



The men’s 4 x 100-metre team of Kenroy Anderson, Oshane Bailey, Rasheed Dwyer and Lerone Clarke, clocked 38.78 seconds, for the silver medal behind Trinidad and Tobago, who won gold in a meet record 38.24 seconds.



Meanwhile, Jamaican Maurice Smith are leading the men’s decathlon after five disciplines.



Smith surged to 4,229 points following victories in four of five disciplines completed yesterday. He won the 100 metres, long jump, shot put and 400 metres, and took fourth place in the high jump. The other five disciplines are scheduled for today.



In Hockey, Jamaica’s men team went down 3-1 to Puerto Rico and will now face Guyana in the fifth to sixth place playoff this morning at 11.30 a.m.



In Basketball, Jamaica’s men team defeated the British Virgin Islands 75-68 and will now play Panama in the fifth to sixth place playoff this afternoon at 1 p.m.



The athletics team will continue its medal hunt today.



Jovanne Jarrett is down to contest the Long Jump final at 5.30 p.m. and Darrell Garwood, the men’s high jump final at 6 p.m.



Jamaica will also be represented in the women’s 4 x 400-metre final, which is a straight final. The men’s team will contest semi-final two of the 4 x 400-metre relay this morning at 10.30 a.m. The final is also scheduled for tonight.
