Jamaican Maurice Smith continues to lead decathlon

Maurice Smith of Jamaica continues to lead the men’s decathlon at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.



After eight of 10 disciplines, Smith has tallied 6,746 points following victory in the 110-metre hurdles and second places in the discus and pole vault this morning.



Smith entered today with 4,229 points following victories in four of five disciplines completed yesterday.



Puerto Rican Steven Morrero, who won the discus and pole vault this morning, is in second place with 6229 points and his countryman Marcos Sanchez holds down third position with 6091 points.



The athletics team will continue its medal hunt later today.



Jovanne Jarrett is down to contest the Long Jump final at 5.30 p.m. and Darrell Garwood the men’s high jump final at 6 p.m.



Jamaica will also be represented in the men and women’s 4 x 400-metre finals tonight.



In Basketball, Jamaica’s men team was leading Panama 5-2 in the first quarter at Sports Time in the fifth to sixth place playoff.



Jamaica’s medal tally at the games is 38 including 12 gold, nine silver and 17 bronze.
